I teach Biology and Chemistry at Hirsch Metro High School in Chicago. My principal helped me to purchase an LCD panel. However, I do not have an overhead projector which is sufficiently bright enough to illuminate the panel's image. In my classroom, I have limited board space, and I have had to affix a melamine board from a hardware store to the wall as a makeshift dry erase board. For these reasons, I need additional media to help convey ideas to my students. My purpose for the LCD panel is to display web pages and models of complex biological and chemical phenomenon that cannot be represented well on a board or by physical models. I have found that my students have a difficult time conceptualizing things that they cannot see, like atoms and molecules in Chemistry and cells and organelles in Biology. Showing movies that symbolize these concepts will be extremely useful in conveying complex abstract ideas.
