Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Language Arts teacher at a middle school in New York City. The population of my school and class is very diverse. Over 95% of my school's population receives free lunch, which is a strong indicator that the overwhelming majority of students come from lower-level income households. This is not usually an obstacle for my strong and determined students, but when it comes to reading, usually the books I have in my room are the only ones they have access to.

I have 96 incredible students who LOVE to read and explore books from "new subject areas," specifically of late, books that are LGBTQ+ friendly.

My classes are amazingly diverse, however, my classroom library is not. My school and classroom, in particular, are coming up short in terms of providing them with enough books written by and about people in the LGBTQ+ community. Moreover, my classroom needs an influx of new books - books that my students have recommended specifically - that they want to read right now. Every kid - EVERY KID - deserves to have books that they can identify with inside of their classroom's library.

My Project

The students I teach are becoming more and more diverse each year. Teaching middle school, you come across many children struggling to fit in and figure out who they are.

Now more than ever, my classes are interested in exploring books and characters and authors from every walk of life.

Leading the list of "books I need" for many of my students are books that feature characters who identify as LGBTQ+.

These books will be an amazing resource for my students to open up their minds and learn about a growing population in their city and school. Having this proposal funded would easily make my classroom library the most extensive library and go-to spot to read a book about or written by a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and I'd be more than willing to share these books with students who aren't even in my classes.
