My students are incarcerated in a juvenile jail 24 hours a day. They live in tiny cells. Many of my students come from poverty and have experienced trauma or community violence of some kind. Students have struggled with education and often come to the institution having dropped out of school. Up to 50% of our students are classified as special education and require services for disabilities.
Despite the often challenging circumstances, my students are resilient, brilliant youth who are working hard to transform their lives.
I am lucky enough to be their English teacher and want to give them opportunities to master tools that will help them to empower and rehabilitate themselves.
Our institution is always open to innovative ideas for how to keep the students occupied and as happy as possible during their incarceration. The leaders have approved the request for a karaoke recreation period that would occur on the units after school and on weekends when there is little programming occurring.
The students love to sing, perform, and just generally have the opportunity to be kids, as many of them were forced to grow up with adults strains and responsibilities far too soon.
Thank you, in advance for your consideration and support.
