Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a group of active 9, 10, and 11 year old youngsters, who love having fun and getting physically fit on the field! Whether it is running laps, playing an organized sport, or completing drills and exercises, my students welcome any physical activity challenge.
My students represent a very mixed population both culturally and economically, and despite challenges, they always give their own personal best and push to succeed!
I teach at a Title I school where I am lucky enough to get to work with such dedicated and hard working students and partner with a group of supportive parents who share the common goal of a quality education for their children.
My Project
The badminton set, netting system, and volleyballs that I am requesting will be used to teach important gross motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and teamwork, while getting students active for at least 60 minutes a day in a fun and engaging way.
This project was "kid-inspired" because Badminton is a new sport to many of my students; They've expressed wanting the opportunity to play something other than the traditional handball or kickball.
It would be great to introduce them to this form of play as they would like new physical activity experiences.
Nets are needed to create a physical space to play badminton and will also be used for volleyball. This space will increase the opportunity to for students to play against their peers and work collaboratively with important peer-to-peer learning of sportsmanship and in addition what is means to work as a team. This project will provide students with the opportunity to work in small groups to learn skills and improve technique within the game.
They will integrate the resources into the classroom by sharing what they have learned through presentations and modeling of ways which their peers can be active. For example, they might create a poster on different types of sports and share how participating in these types of sports contribute to the overall health and well-being of individuals.
The use of these materials will increase the overall health and activity level of my students by first and foremost getting them active! It is my hope that that being active today will lead them to a healthier and active future and a role model to others.
