I teach curious kindergarten-fifth graders at a Title I school. These students are amazing because they are English Learners. Some of my students were born in the US, but their families speak something other than English at home, and others come to our school from another country with little to no English. There is great cultural diversity among my students!
All of my students want to learn and be accepted at school.
It is very hard to start at a new school in a new country when you don't speak the language and you have no connections to the people there.
My Project
My students are using mentor texts this year to improve their skills in reading and writing. We have already completed a reading unit using the book My Name is Yoon. The students were able to make so many connections to the main character. They also improved their questioning skills as we worked through the book. They would be so excited to have their very own copy of the book to take home!
I was surprised when I asked my students if they had books at home and the majority of them said no.
I love reading and try to instill that love in my students. The Mem Fox book is new to them. I'd really like to be able to send these two books home with my students so that they have quality reading books to read when they are not in school.
