Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at a small, early childhood school in the Bronx. Nearly all of my students are eligible for free lunch, and most of them come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. All of my students are bright, enthusiastic learners who are turning into wonderful readers with the rich, diverse balanced literacy program that our school uses. One of the key parts of this literacy programs is the daily shared reading session, in which I teach the students new strategies for decoding words and new comprehension strategies. The students then take these strategies and use them when they read independently. My students learn so much during this time, and they love it! However, lately they have not demonstrated the same joy at shared reading that they did earlier in the year. This is because I have been having trouble making this experience as meaningful to my students as it used to be. Because my students have become such great readers, the big books that our classroom library has are all too easy for them. It is almost impossible to model strategies for working with difficult texts when all of the books you have are easy! Since our school is only a pre-K to first grade school, there are no books that are more challenging in the school for me to use. I don't want my students' accomplishments in reading to turn into an obstacle for them, but in order to push their reading skills to higher and higher levels, I need more appropriate big books. Please help my terrific group of talented young readers achieve to the best of their abilities with a set of new big books on an appropriate reading level.
