My Students

If you were able to visit my Zoom Room this year you would find 7 year old faces that mirror countries from around the world. My students' families come from India, Afghanistan, Burma, Russia, Eritrea, Somalia, Columbia, Nepal, and many other countries from around the globe. Some have immigrated and others have come to our area to seek refuge.

My students speak different home languages, represent different cultures, and made their way to the International Community School through different paths, but all students have in common a sense of open- mindedness and community.

While we have our differences, we all have a love for learning. I agree with Dr. Asa Hilliard when he said “I have never encountered any children in any group who are not geniuses. There is no mystery on how to teach them. The first thing you do is treat them like human beings and the second thing you do is love them.” My students are loved by myself and our community. Each day they are given opportunities to learn in a loving, supportive, and exciting environment.

My Project

Our school has been virtual since March of last year. Our second grade students are extremely tech savvy, however nothing beats paper and pencil when you are learning to add and subtract with regrouping. However- paper and pencil is close to impossible for teachers to see over zoom videos. We have found the best way to see students work in real time is through the use of whiteboards and dry erase markers.

Utilizing different colors while learning has been shown to increase memory and attention.

This is one reason we want to give 4 assorted colors of white board markers instead of just black. These colors will give each student more variety of how to present their work and organize their thoughts.

Finally, we have seen great participation and creativity on Fridays thanks to our amazing projects. We give students time to become more hands on with our Social Studies and Science standards. Then students record videos explaining their creations and relating them to our standards. Recently we discovered that our well loved/ well used glue sticks we provided for each child in August are empty. In order to keep the creativity flowing please help us get a glue stick and pack of 4 assorted colors dry erase markers in the hands of each child in our 2nd grade classes.
