Help me give my students Christmas decorations, including lights, paint and brushes, figurines, and more, for their housing units in the juvenile jail.
My students are incarcerated in a juvenile jail 24 hours a day where they live in tiny cells. Many of my students come from poverty and have experienced trauma or community violence of some kind. Students have struggled with education and often come to the institution having dropped out of school. Up to fifty percent of our population is classified as special education and require services for disabilities.
Despite their often challenging circumstances, my students are resilient, brilliant youth who are working hard to transform their lives.
I am lucky enough to be their English teacher and want to give them opportunities to master tools that will help them to empower and rehabilitate themselves.
My Project
One of the only things that lifts spirits is the annual Christmas decorating contest where each housing unit goes absolutely bananas decorating the housing unit and cell doors.
Christmastime in juvenile hall is one of the absolutely worst parts of the year.
The students become incredibly depressed because they are isolated and away from their families.
The students and staff all invest a lot of creative energy into bringing beauty and the holiday spirit into a place designed to deflate and depress one's spirit. This year, many of the funds for this project have been cut, and our students want to continue the tradition of putting their hearts into creating a festive decor, despite the fact that they are incarcerated.
