Help me give my students books so they can compete in a classroom "Title Fight"! Students get their hands and minds on books of multiples topics and genres to see which title comes out on top!
One of my classroom goals is provide an space where children can experience and look forward to books. To support this goal, I share books I love, have read aloud books, give students time to share their own books, have a classroom 30-book challenge, play Genre Bingo, and connect books to multiple subjects.
I would like to incorporate a "Title Fight" activity to engage students in reading and help them learn about the world.
This would involve setting out two different books for students to read. The books selected feature science, social studies, art, and STEM topics. After reading books, they will vote on which one they think is the best. Then, we have a short class debate on the books reviewing text structure, main idea, and summary. Students make their final vote. That book is the "Title Fight" winner! Bing! Bing! Bing!
Children seem to enjoy and even love this small competition. They don't want to miss out on what their peers are doing. I have done this in past years, and students have asked for more "Title Fights". Currently, I don't have the time or funds to collect multiple copies of books. Having them on had will make it easy to pull out a set of books for them to read every few weeks.
I hope that all of my student will participate. To ensure they all can, I will make recordings of the books available so some student can listen to it while they follow along in the book. Additionally, I will have texts translated into Spanish for ELL students.
I would be very excited to make this project a reality for my students!
