This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a teacher that gets to work with bright, energetic first and second grade students, I see every day how much joy and growth comes from simply being able to run, play, and move. Physical activity is essential not just for healthy bodies, but for healthy minds. It helps students learn to cooperate, build confidence, manage emotions, and recharge so they’re ready to focus in the classroom.

But unfortunately, our students don’t always get those opportunities—because we simply don’t have the equipment.

Our school ball box is almost always empty. Many of the items we once had—basketballs, dodgeballs, handballs, hula hoops—have gone missing, been damaged, or were never returned. What’s left is often flat, broken, or unsafe to use. As teachers, we try our best to make things work, but it becomes incredibly difficult to plan quality physical education lessons or even offer engaging recess activities without the right tools.

This project will help us restock our supplies with durable, safe, and age-appropriate equipment like gator skin soft balls (which are great for little hands), playground balls, hula hoops for games and stations, dodgeballs for team play, and basketballs that our students can actually use. These may seem like simple items, but to our students, they are the key to fun, movement, teamwork, and joy.

I believe every child deserves the chance to feel excited about being active, to laugh with classmates during a group game, to develop coordination and skills, and to learn how to work as a team. These experiences shape not just stronger bodies, but stronger, more confident kids. With your help, we can turn empty ball boxes into opportunities for growth, play, and happiness.
