In Evergreen, over 95% of students come from a low income background. A large majority of students are Hispanic English learners, whose parents do not speak English. The community reflects Latino culture, with many apartment based complexes. All students in this school are under a free-lunch program, thus making Evergreen a title 1 school.
As an incoming new teacher, I am limited to the resources that I can receive to start my classroom. My class has the bare bones of what could be a welcoming, bright, and culturally accepting environment ready for fostering learning across my students. I anticipate that I will have a class that has many needs: from a language gap, a year and a half of pandemic online learning, and a limited access to resources.
My hope in this school is to close the gaps in academic learning, build a culturally accepting classroom, and plant seeds of life-long learners and future leaders.
