The cost of 35 paperback copies of each of 10 classics, such as Lord of the Flies, The Count of Monte Cristo and the Picture of Dorian Gray is $2419, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
Greetings! I am an Eighth Grade Literature teacher in a public school in the South Bronx. I and my classes, (comprised of gifted and talented students), are consistently frustrated by the selection of reading materials offered to us through the school's library and curriculum center. In class, I talk at length about the wealth of information available in the world, but being the inquisitive and eager sorts of students they are, they are not content to wait until the possibility they will be exposed to new books in the future, or have the resources serendipitously fall into their lap.
I'm talking of course about the classics of literature, the books and stories that you and I read and loved in school and are being eclipsed by contemporary offerings. I encourage reading and discussion of literature extensively in my class, but I would love to move my students beyond Harry Potter and the four million novels written by Walter Dean Myers. In addition, I want to ensure that each student in my two classes has their own copy of the book (at least to borrow throughout the semester), so that they have the time and opportunity to connect with the book on a personal level.
This year, I intend to incorporate classic literature in my classes, with the two-fold purpose of allowing the students to discover why it is that certain books become classics (identifying the themes, characters and stories that are universal throughout humankind) and providing them the chance to discuss such themes in an open forum so that they may be exposed to each others' thoughts, discoveries and personal relationships to the story, as well as the ways that the book highlights or criticizes elements of our society. Students will then be better prepared to express their individual reflections and responses through essays and stories of their own.
It is my hope that I, in partnership with the generous people reading my proposal, will be able to facilitate a resurgence of the love of classic literature in New York City public schools. Thank you for your time and consideration.
