Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a K-5, “inner-city,” public school. There are 27 students in my class, which is considered a very high number considering that our school average is 17. Our classroom is logistically quite small, and with student desks needing to be spaced out due to Covid, there is literally NO extra room for centers. Apart for the one kidney table used for small groups, the students’ only workspace is their desks.

My students were so excited to get their individual chrome books a few weeks ago.

Now they can engage in EPIC (online reading), Zearn (online math program), and iReady (online English Language Arts customized lessons). Each of these programs has audio for the students to listen to but, unfortunately, without headphones or earbuds, the sound of 27 different different lessons playing at once is very distracting for all students.

Most parents cannot afford to purchase earbuds for their child. I would be so incredibly happy to be able to provide them through this program. Having earbuds would enable my students to really focus and fully engage in their own online lessons.

My Project

Most of my third-graders tested at Kindergarten level for reading in the recent iReady assessment given at the beginning of this school year. Third grade is a critical point. If they are not proficient readers by the end of third grade, the curriculum in subsequent grades will be incomprehensible, and they will spiral in a downward trajectory.

These reading materials are desperately needed to help my students achieve significant growth in their reading skills.

Most read at Kindergarten level, and many cannot read yet at all. I will use these reading materials as an intervention to get them reading independently by the end of the year, thereby opening the door for future academic success.
