Most of my third-graders tested at Kindergarten level for reading in the recent iReady assessment given at the beginning of this school year. Third grade is a critical point. If they are not proficient readers by the end of third grade, the curriculum in subsequent grades will be incomprehensible, and they will spiral in a downward trajectory. These reading materials are desperately needed to help my students achieve significant growth in their reading skills. Most read at Kindergarten level, and many cannot read yet at all. I will use these reading materials as an intervention to get them reading independently by the end of the year, thereby opening the door for future academic success.
