Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am both a drama teacher and a special education teacher in Astoria, New York. This is only the second year that my school has had a Drama program and thus we are in need of a great deal of resources to be a success! This year we are producing "Guys and Dolls." This will be a wonderful experience for all of my students and the play will provide a wonderful event for the community.
Having a school play will give my students an opportunity to shine, have fun, provide a place to stay and learn after school, express themselves creatively, learn new skills, and make new friends. The benefits are endless! The play will also foster school spirit, something our school desperately needs. Furthermore, having a play will hopefully help raise funds to have future plays and continue the drama program at our school.
Because we are doing "Guys and Dolls" we are in need of various props, wigs, and costumes. We had a few costumes from last year's play, but unfortunately there was a flood in our school and everything was ruined! That means that this year we are starting from scratch, yet again, and would welcome and appreciate any support we can get. And, the items requested can be used time and time again in my drama and special education classes, which is beneficial for hundreds of students.
In addition to the props onstage, we are also in need of audio/visual equipment. We are in need of blank CDs so that our students can make copies of the rehearsal CD and practice their singing at home, as well as a boom box so that we can rehearse afterschool. We have also requested blank DVDs because we are selling copies of the performance as a fundraiser for future shows.
