This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
At the MAS, I am privileged enough to teach an amazing group of K4 students. MAS is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin near the Marquette University campus. With the urban environment of our school, as well as the economic status of our families, each student in the school receives a free or reduced-price lunch program.
My students have such a strong desire to learn but unfortunately face so many obstacles.
Many of my students do not have the means to buy the essential school supplies necessary for the classroom. As a result, I supply a large majority of the classroom supplies. When I first started teaching it was strange to think that I would be buying most of the classroom supplies myself. However, after meeting my students I realized how much these supplies mean to them. Now buying the supplies is something I do each year without hesitation.
These are amazing children. They have a lot working against them, but still show so such enthusiasm and desire to grow. That is just one of the many ways they inspire me each and every day.
My Project
Amazing things are happening in our K4 classroom! As the school year continues and looking into future school years, I am hoping to increase hands on, fun, interactive learning for these smart scholars. I would LOVE to get my students away from doing a worksheet when they finish their breakfast in the morning and instead get them doing engaging, hands on activities in order to get them excited about the start of the day. For example, when students come in for the day they would eat their breakfast and then have the chance to start an engaging activity right away! Students would love getting to use the legos to build all kinds of creations, pattern blocks, letter and word puzzles and the rest of the wonderful materials to start their day off right! Instead of a boring worksheet they would be putting together sight word puzzles to help with sight word recognition. Every material picked it meant to enhance literacy, math, exploration, and overall creativity.
