I teach kindergarten at a Title I school. Many of our children come from economically disadvantaged families, and all the children at my school receive breakfast and lunch at no cost. My school is based in North Carolina, close to the largest military base in the United States. My school serves a lot of military families, and many children in my class have parents actively serving in the military.
As a teacher, I want to continue to make sure that my kids' learning experience is rewarding and memorable when they spend time in my classroom.
My children have so much energy and are willing to learn and experience new learning opportunities. They thrive on kinesthetic opportunities and engage fully in opportunities that are provided to them. Many of the children in my class come from military families and spend much time with only one parent. Many others come from single-parent families and/or live in low-income households.
My Project
As a kindergarten teacher it is my job to instill a passion for reading from the day children step foot into my classroom. The books that have been chosen for this project are written by well known British authors who created 'awe' and 'wow' to reading enjoyment when I was younger, and I want to share the same enthusiasm and inspiration in my classroom.
Unfortunately due to socioeconomic issues many children in my classroom do not have access to books at home, and the only time they read or listen to books being read to them is during their time in school.
This makes it all the more important that I have a classroom stocked with engaging and exciting books.
Prior to beginning my teaching career, I began collecting books for my classroom - knowing that a good collection is imperative for fostering a love of books. However as an international teacher, I was limited with the quantity of books I could bring take with me hence why I have created this project.
