My students need 30 binders and a storage center in order to organize their notes for Writer's Workshop; 30 writing folders to keep track of their writing pieces.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help students be the best writers they can be. Students need to be organized and have access to writing resources at their seats in binders and folders. Organization and accessibility will make all the difference to my students.
My students attend a large inner city school in Southern California.
Every year students come eager to learn. For many of them, the classroom is a haven from many of the challenges they encounter in their communities. Gang violence is common in their neighborhoods, as is a constant police presence. Many students face hardships that arise from living in poverty. Yet, their enthusiasm and love of learning is inspirational to me. During Writer's Workshop, students have an opportunity to bring their experiences into the classroom and to share them through their writing.
My Project
With notebooks, students will be able to keep and organize copies of mini-lessons, writing checklists, published copies of their work, and research notes. They will be able to access these whenever they need them during Writer's Workshop Time. I plan to use sheet protectors and dividers to help them learn how to organize and monitor their own work. This means that the room environment and their desks will be less cluttered as they will have copies of past lessons/notes on topics such as: capitalization, main idea sentence starters, engaging endings and using similes and metaphors. The Writing folders will help students go through each step of the writing process from pre-writing to publishing. When I conference with them, it will help me see what they have done and where they need to go to publish. The book case will help organize the binders, as their desks have limited space. Having quality tools to organize their writing will inspire them to be excellent writers.
A key factor to student success is organization.
The earlier they learn how to do this, the better their chances of success. I believe that every student can succeed with the right teaching and the right materials. Having binders at their disposal will help them access the resources they need throughout the year whether they are working on writing a narrative or a report on an animal. Thank you.
