Help me give my students a classroom color printer/scanner/copier and sets of ink to make their illustrations and narrative stories come to LIFE with COLOR, as I combine their writing into a keepsake book to read!
At our school, we are committed to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment where each student achieves high academic standards, behaves with integrity and becomes a contributing citizen.
My students reside on the northeastern side of O'ahu, Hawaii and attend an elementary school that is incredibly rooted in the culture of their community.
Parents and the community play an integral role in our school and the lives of our keiki, or "children" in Hawaiian. The demographics and culture in our school are quite unique. We have many Polynesian students such as Hawaiian, Tongan, Samoan, Tahitian, Fijian, Maori, as well as other ethnic groups. Our kids come from a community tightly knit in Mormon values which fosters our kids to be disciplined, build ethical character and maintain strong ties to their family. Our school is walking distance to BYU Brigham Young University. This brings many college students to our school to study education which further promotes our idea of preparing our kids to be college and career ready.
My Project
My students love writing narrative stories in class and also sharing these stories with their peers. Students are proud to attach illustrations to their stories which seems to bring them to life. Typically I have students select images from the Internet, however, I’d like students to create their own illustrations which I will be scanning their drawing to add on their Google Doc story. We do not have color printers at school and I always print them at home on my own color printer. What I also love about this printer is I can take photos of the students work and print them straight from my mobile device. This is a bonus feature I plan on using to highlight student work in the classroom such as STEM projects, Art work and exemplary student work. After all students have written their stories, which may be fractured fairy tales, fantasy, tall tales, and even photography poetry, I create a bound spiral book for them to keep. It is a big project and I have the finished product at the end of the school year, but we write all year long. The culminating product is a gift for my students when they leave for summer. I know my students will be even more engaged in their story writing knowing that their colorful illustrations will be included in it!
