My Students

Our Title I public school in Phoenix, Arizona serves a diverse group of students, with many different academic and social emotional needs. The students in my class are brilliant, highly motivated, and creative learners. They learn best when given opportunities to explore through visual, auditory, tactile, kinesthetic, and social activities. With our large class it’s important to find ways to meet the learning needs of every student. Creating a space where every child can engage in learning regardless of their learning style.

A light table provides a safe space for tactile, or kinesthetic learners, who need movement.

A light table will also engage students who are auditory learners, who talk about what they're doing, and visual learners, who have the opportunity to see what everyone else is creating. For social learners, the time spent in small group conversation will strengthen their knowledge and develop their language skills.

My Project

I believe it is important to educate the whole child… Meeting their needs socially, emotionally, physically and academically. My classroom is set up to foster a creative, stimulating learning atmosphere that encourages curiosity, risk-taking, and confidence. I believe that students should be actively engaged in challenging and meaningful learning experiences. The addition of a light table in our classroom supports the emotional and social development of young learners by providing them a safe space to engage with content through exploratory learning and scientific discovery. This space will allow students to interact, problem solve, and explore.

The light table will be a space for conversation and language development as students innovate and create with the Magna-Tiles, recycled materials, painting bins, color-mixing petri dishes, etc.

Through peer-to- peer conversations they will learn how to work together and navigate problem solving strategies.

Students will use the table for a variety of engaging academic activities. For example, young scholars that are working on anything from letter recognition to spelling will use the light table. They will be able to demonstrate learning by using plastic letters on the light table. Students will explore and construct 3-D shapes and build with transparent magnetic tiles.

Lastly, the light table will assist students who struggle with fine motor skills, such as holding a pencil. Students will have the opportunity to strengthen their fine motor skills through the manipulation of small objects. Young artists will construct translucent 3-D sculptures made from recycled plastic bottles. And will also practice their pencil grips as they trace and sketch on the illuminated table. The learning opportunities are truly endless.
