I am the District School Nurse for a small, very underserved area in Arkansas. 100% of our kids are economically disadvantaged. Our area is made up of mostly generational farms that are far from services. Many families do not have reliable transportation to drive the long distances required to get dental care for their children, even though the services are covered by the state. The adults suffer from poor oral care/health and the cycle repeats itself in their children.
We do not have a dental care project in our district and I am taking it upon myself to create one.
I have applied to Delta Dental for grant assistance as well as to the State Health Department to request mobile oral dental clinic visits to our area. I have received the grant from Delta Dental that will help cover curriculum teaching costs, copies, posters, etc. and have successfully scheduled the first mobile dental clinic visits to our schools and communities in March 2024. My goal is to not only teach the students oral dental care, but to send home information and supplies for the families as well. I am looking for additional help and support to get my project going strong. The books and mouth puppet will allow me to teach students how to perform good oral hygiene by giving them visuals. The plaque tablets will show the students where they need to pay more attention to brushing in their own mouths and reinforce learning. The toothbrushes, paste, and floss will enable the students to immediately practice what they have learned about caring for their mouth and they can also take those supplies home for use. I have named my project Bright Smiles because a good education, healthy habits and bright smiles will set students up for success in life.
