My students are creative, hard-working, and strive to be their best selves at school. I teach at a school with high poverty levels where 81.4% of students receive free or reduced lunch students. We are culturally diverse and have started a Dual-Language program this year. In grades, kindergarten through second grade, students learn in an environment where 50% of classroom instruction is taught in Spanish and 50% in English. Dual Language Instruction (DLI) teachers practice language separation to support language development goals. Standards-based academic content in both Spanish and English is taught and assessed in two languages throughout the school year.
As a teacher, I can't control what happens when students go home but as a school, we can ensure safety and a sense of belonging within the school walls.
Thank you for your support in making a difference!
Most of my students are visual learners who need bright and bold examples in order to enhance their learning. In my classroom, I spend a lot of time printing but we only have access to black ink. During math, we use color to distinguish the differences in a 100's charts, clock examples, shapes, and calendars. For reading, we use color to distinguish between vowels and consonants, spelling patterns, teaching contractions, and many other ways!
Through visual learning, people of all ages will be able to better recall facts and retain learning.
Visual learning will also provide new opportunities to some students with learning differences and challenge students who are gifted or twice exceptional. Thank you for you help in making learning fun and visual!
