Bright Ideas: Workbenches and Lighting for Science Lab Success

My Project

I teach 160 ninth-grade students, 30% of whom are special education learners with additional needs. Many of these students struggle with math and reading but thrive during hands-on science activities. Yet our current classroom setup limits their potential, and, recognizing those limitations, my students brainstormed ideas to improve the room.

The goal of this project is to bring my students’ bright ideas to life, improving our lab for better learning and discovery.

Our room has no windows or natural light. It relies on fluorescent ceiling lights, which create poor visibility under the counters, making observations during labs difficult. In addition, our existing desks have odd, triangle-shaped tops and are low in height, making them unsuitable for some experiments and forcing students to hunch when standing or working on shadowed counters during other experiments.

To better support my students, I am requesting adjustable-height workbenches and lighting upgrades. The workbenches will allow students to stand comfortably at full-surface tables, improving functionality and accessibility for all learners. The lighting upgrades will brighten the workspaces, especially in shadowed areas, improving accuracy for lab observations while creating a more inviting and functional environment.

These upgrades will help my students engage more deeply in science, fostering curiosity and confidence as they explore concepts through hands-on learning. By reducing physical strain and improving visibility, this project will remove barriers that interfere with their ability to concentrate and succeed.

My students are resilient and creative learners who shine in activities that encourage exploration and critical thinking. With your support, we can create a comfortable and inspiring science lab where every student feels empowered to discover and learn.
