Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are learning to think deeply about what they read and how they solve problems. With color-coded highlighters, they’ll be able to annotate text in reading by identifying character traits, conflict, and theme using yellow, pink, and green. In math, they’ll apply the same colors to break down word problems using the CUBES strategy—circling numbers, underlining questions, boxing key words, and eliminating unnecessary information. This consistent color system will help students make meaning from text in all subject areas.
Color-coded annotation will give my English learners the tools to access rigorous reading and math tasks with confidence and clarity.
These highlighters support comprehension by turning invisible thinking into something visual and tangible. Students will use them to engage with text more purposefully, participate in deeper discussions, and explain their ideas in writing—all of which strengthen their academic skills across the board.
