Every day, I teach reading to my students using whole group, small group and independent learning. Small group work with the teacher is crucial for a successful literacy lesson. When the teacher works with a small group, the other students work on appropriate independent assignments.
In third grade, our daily literacy block depends on students following a unique plan tailored to their educational needs.
As children acquire independent learning skills, different colored supplies help them learn the routine. For English Language Learners and students with special needs, using color is essential for smooth transitions.
These children need the most support and are often the least confident in the classroom. Using brightly colored supplies allows students who can’t easily follow a posted schedule or labeled work baskets to complete independent assignments. These students follow color coded schedules until they acquire more language skills.
