This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love most about my students, especially our incredible English Learner population, is their resilience, eagerness to learn, and vibrant cultural perspectives. They navigate the challenges of learning a new language with remarkable determination, all while embracing new experiences and sharing their rich backgrounds. It's truly inspiring to see them build connections, support each other, and actively engage in our library. They bring a unique energy and depth to our school community.

These new young adult fiction books in Spanish are far more than just stories; they are vital resources that will help my students learn and thrive.

Reading engaging fiction in their native language significantly strengthens their foundational literacy skills, which are crucial for English language acquisition. When students can fully comprehend a story in Spanish, it builds confidence and provides a strong cognitive bridge to understanding similar narratives in English. And, our students often check-out books in both languages, which also builds their language skills. This isn't just about reading; it's about building brainpower for both languages.
