My students need 5 Chromebooks to go online when they don't have their own portable devices and all of the library's devices are reserved by teachers.

My Students
"Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) in schools is all the rage, but what if a student doesn't have a smartphone, tablet, or laptop? Let's not leave him/her feeling left out or struggling to keep up!
I am a library media specialist at a public high school that serves predominately middle class, blue collar families.
There is not a lot of family emphasis on going to college for most of our kids.
Our school and district have made it a goal to prepare our kids for college and give them the encouragement they need to move them forward. 30% of our students receive free/reduced-price lunches.
Every day in my library is different. The students know they can come here for traditional library activities like reading and research, but they also come here to create digital content for classes. The library has become a hub for technology and engagement.
My Project
Imagine sitting in Social Studies class and discussing a current event. What if each student could research online, relevant news stories as they worked? No trip to the library, no fighting over the computer in the room--they just pull out their smartphones, iPads, or laptops and find relevant, interesting stories to share with the teacher?
Well, that is the picture of what is happening around the country as schools implement BYOD policies.
Our school has such a policy, but what about the students that don't have such devices. With the addition of Chromebooks that students could check-out, they could easily stay on task and complete assignments, even if if they didn't own any of the technology themselves.
Our students know how to be social with technology, but they need guidance and practice learning how to use technology educationally and productively. BYOD policies can begin to address this goal, but we need to ensure needy students have access to the technology so we can bridge the digital divide between the haves and have-nots!
