My Students

I have a very special group of diverse students from different backgrounds, and very different reading levels. My students are English Learners in their first through third year in U.S. schools. They come from around the world and encounter a new culture, a new language, and a new set of rules. English learners come with the eagerness to learn, but encounter difficulties when appropriate reading leveled books of high interest are not available for them.

I want to encourage my kids to love reading, but this is only possible with books they can relate with.

I want them to have books that they want to read, and that they can read. I want to promote the love of reading in my students, and I want them to know that reading is the gateway to magical worlds, and infinite knowledge. My students would love to read about people that have made a difference in the world, about different cultures, and about fun adventures. Many of my students don't have books at home, and I want them to have options that are valuable to them.

My Project

English learners at the middle school level often find it difficult to find engaging books at their reading level. Many newcomers arrive at our schools without the knowledge of the English alphabet or without knowing how to read. Often times when they are asked if they like to read, they answer negatively, but when they are given the right book, they enjoy it, and are excited to tell us about it.

I want my kids to love reading!

In order to do that, they need to find a book they are able to read. Having different options, whether they are picture books, graphic novels or low readability books, English learners will be able to engage with books they find relatable, appealing, and reachable.

Having a classroom library with these types of books will give my English learners a confidence boost, because they will have a variety of books to choose from, and they will be capable of interacting with them. They will feel successful and empowered to pick another book and read it!
