Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our class is a unique blend of boys and girls striving hard to be there best. We have several students still trying to learn English as their second language. We also have a few students moving forward with gifted testing. Our learning goals are all unique as each child has entered and will continue to work at an independent pace.
Our students come from various home environments, but we work relentlessly to close the gap.
In addition to our efforts to make learning in our classroom safe, 100% of our students receive free breakfast and free lunch to ensure hunger is not an issue. These hardworking students deserve the very best.
My Project
Every day we see the world changing around us. We have no way to predict what the adult world will hold for today's learners. Every day more and more students are enrolling at our school that have been displaced due to Hurricane Maria. These students are already nervous, scared, and some are even traumatized. In addition to the students that we have enrolling, we have a large number of students that are worried about their family members that are still in Puerto Rico especially with reports of power outages still being an issue all over the tiny island.
With all of that and SO much more, our students are still expected to meet high expectations based on rigorous standards.
With these iPads, learners will be able to work with iReady in both reading and math on personalized learning paths to meet their individual needs. Furthermore, some of our learners are striving every day to meet grade level, let alone understand the English language. E-books are a perfect option to curb any embarrassment students may feel about reading at a lower level than their peers, or with their slower rate of fluency. An ebook doesn't shout, "look how long it's taking my bookmark to move" or, "look at this low-level book!" It's slightly more private. We're lucky with ebooks as our Media Center hosts a large amount on MackinVIA and over 5,000 engaging ebooks on MyON. Both programs can and will be used with these iPads.
