This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are English language learners whose school is located near low-cost housing projects, in a high poverty area in California. All students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most students come from families whose parents cannot support them with literacy or homework, as they cannot speak sufficient English, or are sometimes illiterate. Additionally, some of them spend most of their day at school, in an after-school program, as their parents are not able to care for them at home.
The majority of my students begin the year below grade level.
Despite the work, we do in our classroom to meet the needs of all students, and notwithstanding the students' desire to learn, by the end of the year, some are still unable to meet the grade-level standards.
My Project
Help my newcomer students to build their English vocabulary and through the Vocabulary Development Photo Card Libraries, the ELD Reading Comprehension Center, and the Match-It! Spanish-English Sentences Activity Pockets.
During Designated ELD time, students who are new to the English language will use these materials to help build critical English language skills.
They will explore different topics and ask and answer questions, as well as match up illustrated cards and practice reading in both English and Spanish.
When used as part of a comprehensive ELD program, these materials help children build critical English language skills
