Bridging the Gap Between Poverty and Student Engagement
My students need 27 dictionaries, a Microsoft Surface and non-fiction books, like a set of the Inside Sports Series and the Popular Music Through the Decades Series, to encourage language growth. They also need outside sports equipment to enjoy an enriched PE experience.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students come from homes with little family support and attention. They come to school seeking positive engaging activities to keep them distracted from the hardships at home. With the necessary PE equipment, art materials and books to inspire my students, I will able to meet their needs.
Most of my students were born and raised in South Richmond, notoriously known for drugs, gang violence and one of the highest murder rates in America.
Students in my class have experienced or witnessed murders, domestic violence, rape and living in single parent homes with a hard working parent they hardly ever see. Even though at a young age they have experienced more than most adults and have been traumatized by these experiences, they still cling on to their innocence. My students are creative, talented, smart, diligent learners and loving. Our school is currently under construction so our classrooms are in portables that often lose heat and serve as homes for rodents. We have broken computers in the classroom that will never be replaced or fixed until we move into the new school building some time in 2016. Our school is currently ranked the lowest in performance in our school district.
My Project
With the materials I am requesting, my students will be able to take part in organized sports activities during recess, lunch and PE. They will understand how to play sports games cooperatively as a team. My students will also get to read a selection of non-fiction, science and novel books that will help build their vocabulary and reading comprehension abilities.
My students are use to receiving less then what they deserve.
Their education is vital for their survival in Richmond and with donations, they will have the opportunity to receive an enriched education that will encourage personal growth, nurture their talents and provide them with an outlet.
