My Students
Our school is a middle/high school in the urban area of Maryland. We focus on educating our students to become great leaders and citizens. Students are celebrated for exhibiting our school's core values: integrity, scholarship, citizenship, perseverance, and sustainability.
My students learn best through real-world applications, hands-on activities, and authentic experiences.
They work super hard and they are eager to learn. I teach students with diverse abilities, interests, and backgrounds. My students are in various grade levels, but they all thrive when they get to "do" science!
For the 2021-2022 school year, I am teaching AP Seminar, AP Research, and Independent Study: Science. STEM/STEAM hands-on activities, cross-curricular projects, and laboratory investigations help my students to learn and apply concepts.
Having experiences dealing with research in high school will better prepare them for their future college and career choices. AP Seminar and AP Research allow them to explore themes, develop and refine their reading and writing skills, earn college credit, and so much more. Independent Study: Science allows them to explore topics within science that are interesting to them. I am so excited to be teaching these courses!
My Project
I am requesting a Chromebook so my students can access websites like Calm, Next Gen Personal Finance, and Nearpod.
Technology has been an integral, necessary component of success last school year.
Last year, we were remotely teaching and learning until March when we moved to a hybrid model. Every student needed their own device to access Google Classroom, programs like Nearpod for interactive learning, Jamboard for collaboration, websites, and more. Some students borrowed school-owned devices, but others shared or borrowed a device.
Some students did purchase a device, but many of our families are not in a position to do this. We are in-person for the 2021-2022 school year. My school wants to shift to 1:1 devices, eliminating the need for students to buy, share, or borrow a device. Not having to worry about purchasing, sharing, or borrowing a device will alleviate financial and mental stress. This will support my students' emotional and mental well-being. If we have enough devices, students would also be able to use devices at home!
This Chromebook will help to bridge the digital divide! Providing a device to every student will make their education more equitable. Students will need a device to research, type their papers and create their presentations, and apply their 21st-century skills. Students will use these devices for a variety of activities: interacting with others on Nearpod, learning about financial literacy, developing their STEM skills, accessing diverse digital books to increase their literacy skills while seeing themselves and others, and so much more! Students will be able to access websites like Calm, which would help their mental health by reducing stress. Masks are required in school. Sometimes they become soiled, break, or students forget them. Having a supply to provide a mask when needed will keep students learning in-person!
