My Students

Gifted students and problem solving go hand-in-hand (literally in this case). My GATE (gifted) students are craving additional opportunities to practice using their keen sense of observation, memory, and ability to solve problems. My students can't wait to try, fail, and look at the situation in a new way.

Most people presume that since a child is gifted, they excel in all areas.

However, most gifted students need additional experiences to nourish their abilities and participate in collaborative activities with their peers. My gifted students represent a very diverse population. This project would impact approximately 30 students in 4th grade.

My Project

The over-arching theme for my fourth grade students this year is structures. When given the choice of units to learn about, they chose to learn about the structure of bridges.

Just like the structure of bridges, my students' minds are only as strong as their parts.

After learning about famous bridges, examining the structures of bridges, I'd like my students to have a real-world experience and put their knowledge to use by building a bridge made of balsa wood. Students will use critical thinking and problem solving to design, measure, and create a bridge they think can withstand the most weight. Students will test the strength of bridges and compete against other teams.
