My Students

My class is made up of thirty-two students who speak 13 different languages and come from more than 20 different countries. They are all immigrants and refugees learning to work together while learning a new language and culture. Our school is nearly 100% free lunch, and most children live within a ten mile radius of the school. Our school houses many cultures, languages and religions. I work hard each day to make sure they are having meaningful experiences in their new school setting.

All of my students have experienced an interrupted education due to war, political unrest, or extreme poverty in their native country.

Most of my students have been in the US for less than a year, and they work hard every day to learn English and academic content. My students are highly motivated and want to be successful contributors to society.

My Project

I am so excited to welcome my students back to a new school year. The challenge I face is that my students are also adjusting to living in the United States while learning a new language and school system. The best way to help my students adjust to this new experience is to create a warm and inviting environment that celebrates the unique cultural experiences and perspectives each student brings. Furthermore, my students need the proper materials to develop their English language skills to be successful with grade-level content in their new language. These materials and resources for building a multicultural classroom library are crucial for my immigrant students as they tackle the challenges of rebuilding their lives in a new culture.

Students need literature that reflects their diversity, community, and experiences while giving them opportunities to explore new ideas and ways of connecting with their neighbors.

The multicultural books will be used for our classroom library while the spiral notebooks will be used for daily journal writing throughout the school year. The pencils, markers, glue, and paper will be used to create cultural displays celebrating the students' identity in a creative way. My students' tremendous growth in language development, social skills, and academic achievement through the course of the school year always amaze me.
