Bridging Disciplinary Gaps Between Science, Math, and English in HS!

Help me give my students the ability to bridge gaps between their science learning and learning in Math and English. Bridging the gaps in their core content areas through collaborative, interdisciplinary practices is shown to improve overall learning.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students have been shown to make more aggressive learning games when the core content areas are integrated instead of discrete learning areas. As a science teacher at a Title I, Urban high school in Austin, Texas, I have seen first-hand how crossing disciplinary boundaries with structure, support, and collaborative learning strategies raises student engagement and efficacy.

My students are primarily English learners and often struggle with reading and basic math skills.

Being successful in science and STEM requires skills across disciplinary boundaries as does success in the professional world beyond high school and college. My students are the hardest-working students I have had the privilege of teaching in my career so far. They need practice in English reading and computational analysis skills that will help them across the high school and college prep curriculum.

The requested supplies will provide content-relevant books that they can practice their reading and comprehension skills and will allow for cross-course collaboration with other teachers in my school. Additional supplies will provide for organizing their student work, adding relevant material to their interactive notebooks, remind them of computational rules, and provide the teacher with additional collaborative learning strategies to help the students successfully apply the material they read and learn.

Many of my students do not have the individual resources to purchase these materials on their own. They are often working to support their families and would have limited time outside of school to practice all of these skills on their own. These resources would help me best utilize class time to teach science content while also bridging gaps in English and Math that would help my students become well-rounded scholars and working professionals when they graduate.
