Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a fifth grade teacher in the East Harlem section of New York City. Half of my students are African-American, but all of them have recently become interested in the Civil Rights Movement as a result of some of the work we have done during Black History Month, as well as some of the poetry we have read that was written during the Harlem Renaissance. I am an American Jew. While my students know what my religion is, they are not familiar with much about the Jewish culture since I hesitate bringing it up due to the separation of church and state. However, I think it's important for my students to know about the relationship between African Americans and American Jews. Hence, I am planning to take them to the Jewish Museum, located in Manhattan, for a workshop called Bridges and Boundaries. The workshop at the museum will explore the historical events and circumstances that have impacted the complex relationship between African Americans and American Jews from the early 1900s through the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Students will explore issues of racism and social activism as they view historic artifacts, photographs and contemporary works of art. Please help me bring this extraordinary educational opportunity to my students.
