This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a high poverty school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are thoughtful and enthusiastic learners.
They come to class each day eager to see their school family and tackle academic challenges. I am constantly amazed by their ingenuity and desire to be better than they were yesterday.
In my classroom, we focus on becoming learners, not just learning material. Hopefully, the skills they acquire are ones that will benefit them throughout their academic journey.
My Project
When students do not talk academically in class, I have to find ways to encourage them. I pass out tickets when students share their thinking. The tickets can then be traded for candy. This helps them get over their shyness at discussing their thoughts and leads to truly insightful conversations!
I constantly find myself amazed at the conversations I overhear when students are working with partners or in groups.
I will do just about anything to get academic conversations started in my class...sometimes that means I have to bribe my students with candy.
