My Students
My students walk into our classroom every day full of excitement, ready to learn, and eager to see what is in store for the day. My students, Educational Assistants, and I have created an environment where we are all able to succeed and feel valued by those in our classroom family. I truly could not ask for a better staff and group of students with whom to work.
My students are in a self-contained classroom and have significant to profound disabilities.
The students in my classroom face many challenges every day due to their limited academic skills, life skills, and ability to communicate with others. Within my classroom, we try to provide the students with multiple opportunities to learn academic skills and how to use them in real life.
My Project
As a special education teacher, I strive to help my students relate what they are learning to the real world. My students need assistance in relating what they learn in the classroom to the real world. After much research and talking with other staff, parents, and the students in my classroom, we would like to start a coffee cart with our self-contained 4th and 5th-grade students. We believe this will help the students develop academic skills (money counting, reading directions, sequencing steps, etc.), social skills, positive interactions with students and teachers, independence, and self-esteem.
The students will use the supplies to start their own business, Brewing Independence.
The students will help to develop a Google Form, which will be sent out to teachers weekly. Teachers will be asked to complete and submit their order. Once the order is submitted, students will organize the information and get ready to make the coffees. Students will use Keurig coffee brewers and K-cups to make the ordered coffee. They will follow the order form and determine whether the order requires creamer or sugar. The will organize the orders and deliver them in an efficient manner. Students will then collect and track their income, keep inventory, and clean up when finished. The real-world skills, academic skills, and character building we will work on are limitless!
