Breathing Life Into Science: Exploring Respiration & the Planet

Help me give my students a respiration kit so they can explore how cellular respiration connects to climate and environmental science understanding how living organisms impact and are impacted by the carbon cycle and our planet’s ecosystems.

My Project

I love that my students are naturally curious, hands-on learners who thrive when science connects to the world around them. They ask big questions, think critically, and care about the environment—qualities that make them not just learners, but future leaders. With a germinating pea respiration kit, my students will get to see cellular respiration in action, rather than just read about it in a textbook. This tangible experience will help them understand how energy flows through living systems and ties into global issues like climate change and the carbon cycle.

This project will give my students the opportunity to conduct real-world science experiments that deepen their understanding of life and environmental systems.

My goal is to strengthen their grasp of key biology concepts while also showing how these ideas connect to sustainability and climate literacy. These engaging labs will support inquiry-based learning, reinforce academic language, and prepare them for high-stakes testing like the STAAR—while also sparking conversations about their role in protecting the planet.
