My project needs 1 yoga kit for kids and 20 yoga mats.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Murphy's classroom raised $474
This project is fully funded
Can we do yoga today? Please! This desperate plea is a request that one of my students asks me. Daily! I teach 4/5th grade English Language Learners. All of my students are refugees coming from countries all over the world. They have come to the United States for safety and a better life. Many of them have seen horrible things in their young lives. Unfortunately, the majority of my students are now living in unsafe neighborhoods in the US. They see a lot of violence where they live and bring that anxiety into the classroom. My job as a teacher is to teach them English and reading and writing. But it is difficult for students to focus on school when they have anxieties about what they saw in their native countries and stressful lives in this country. My 10 year old students have taken on many adult responsibilities by helping their parents that don't speak English.
I began practicing yoga 10 years ago. I found that it relaxed me and helped me to focus. A few years ago, I had a particularly difficult class and started doing some yoga poses with the students after lunch. Wow! What a difference it made. Students were able to focus on their work and it helped them calm some of their anxieties.
The problem is I have no mats for students to do poses on. Practicing on the cold floor is hard to do! I also don't know that many poses for kids to do. I am asking for yoga mats and a yoga kids book so my students and I can practice yoga together.
I feel that by being calming and listening to our breathing just a few minutes a day can help the students focus on their work and be calmer and happier.
