I need funding for my training supplies for Breathe For Change Yoga & Wellness Training. These are required supplies and recommended resources for my B4C professional development in yoga, mindfulness and social emotional learning.
I work with 7th grade students, who are diverse and unique learners. My students are proud of their accomplishments, but like many middle school age children, they can also struggle with symptoms of stress and anxiety. According to the 2015 Middle School Youth Risk Behavior Survey administered to Arlington Students, one quarter (25.9%) of all respondents report that they are under too much stress or pressure either “most of the time” or “always”. This perception increased each year by grade (grade 6 – 18.9%, grade 7 – 22.1%, grade 8 – 37.0%) (females – 35.2%, males – 15.3%).
Enhancing the physical, mental and social-emotional well-being of individuals has been shown to have a positive impact on entire communities.
I have been teaching for 11 years and I have a strong desire to support the well-being of my students.
Breathe For Change draws upon the growing body of research linking mind-body wellness practices such as mindfulness and yoga to stress reduction, enhanced executive function, and increased emotional regulation. Executive function, which encompasses working memory and higher order thinking tasks, can be disrupted due to emotional dysregulation. Mindfulness promotes our ability to regulate emotion, which is key to getting back into control.
My Project
Breathe For Change professional development is based on the powerful impacts of mindfulness and yoga practices in education, demonstrated through qualitative and quantitative research. Throughout academic literature, mindfulness practices are seen to promote psychological well-being, reduce stress, increase awareness of the body and mind, and promote emotional flexibility. Through mindfulness practices, individuals heighten their self- awareness thereby decreasing “reactive emotional patterns and increase self-control.”
Many mindfulness and yoga teacher trainings exist, but few focus their curriculum in the education field.
Breathe For Change utilizes a curriculum created by educators for educators and creates a unique opportunity for mind-body practices and yoga to be brought into my classroom. I am so grateful my Breathe for Change project is fully funded! I now need to purchase the reading texts and yoga props listed below. Your donation will cover the price required supplies and recommended resources for the professional development.
I look forward to incorporating this mindfulness and yoga practice into my classroom in order to better support my students.
