Breathe for Change: Teaching Social-Emotional Wellness Through Mindfulness and Yoga
I need funding to become a certified social-emotional, mindfulness, and yoga instructor to help support my students as they navigate the challenges of the pandemic, remote learning, and other life stressors.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title I Career and Technical Education high school in lower Manhattan that specializes in health sciences, preparing students to engage in pharmaceutical, dental, and medical careers and colleges. They are creative, driven, and resilient.
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, they have experienced a series of traumas, leaving many struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, and loss of motivation.
My Project
This project will give me the tools to understand how wellness, mindfulness, and yoga can become regular practices in our English classroom so that students can feel in tune with their emotions and needs, empowered by their strengths, and confident in the face of challenges.
My students are capable of anything, and this trauma-informed training will allow me to teach them strategies to help handle stressors they experience and that often interfere with their learning.
I've already done a few mindfulness activities with students during remote learning, and they loved them. They shared how much calmer, more focused, and in control they felt afterward. I know that Breathe for Change's training will provide me with a wide variety of practices to meet the diverse needs of my incredible students.
