Breathe for Change: Mindfulness and Social-Emotional Learning Strategies for Students

My Students

Over the last 12 months, my students have struggled with the many changes and transitions for both learnings at school and at home brought about from the pandemic. Finding ways to communicate, and express how they feel has often been a struggle if not harder now. I'm a School Counselor and this year, more than 60% of the students that I serve have shared and/or experienced a hardship or setback for learning; and all students could benefit from mindfulness and social-emotional learning tools to help them cope, create goals, and to be resilient.

Developing social-emotional skills is an important foundation for helping students regulate their behavior and emotions so that they can not only express how they feel but build on their strengths to create positive goals for success.

Students are not alone when learning how to cope. I find myself using mindfulness strategies with parents and teachers too, showing that vulnerability is okay and that we are in this together! My school is a school of caring and compassionate adults. Sharing these tools with others will help us build our school community from the inside out.

My Project

I'll be attending a Breathe For Change 6-week Summer cohort that will help me expand my skills in mindfulness, social-emotional learning, and yoga. The curriculum includes trauma-focused strategies, that can help me support students who have intense emotional needs from the pandemic transition and beyond. Completion of the program leads to Wellness, SEL, and yoga teacher certification.

The certification not only helps with providing supports for students but will allow me to provide additional SEL resources to parents and the Charlotte community.

Through a transformative approach, the curriculum helps to encourage change from within, empowering counselors, students, parents, and the community by using wellness for healing.
