My students come from all over the city of Columbus, the largest urban, public school district in Ohio, to participate in a full-time gifted program. These young, passionate gifted learners have unique social-emotional needs. Some students are twice-exceptional, meaning they are also coping with a specific learning disability, such as Autism. Others struggle with perfectionism, anxiety, and/or conflict resolution. A meditation and mindfulness practice provides my students with skills for coping with their intense emotions. My hope is that they carry their practice into other areas of their lives as well.
My Project
I've already self-funded a year-long subscription to Calm.com for my classroom. This resource has many features and meditations, but my favorite one to use with my students is the Loving Kindess Meditation. Who doesn't need to take a moment within their day to give themselves a little love and kindess? The materials I'm requesting in this project will enhance our meditation and mindfulness practice by providing comfortable floor seating that we will use during our practice (and most likely throughout the day as part of our flexible seating!). The affirmation cards will be student-selected and used as part of a calming, breathing routine at school and at home. The kids love these cards, which feature a wide variety of positive messages focusing on self-love and self-worth. As our practice grows, I'm always looking for new ideas to incorporate, so the book Breathe, Chill will provide new techniques and games I can share with my students. One of our favorite activities has been the Flying Wish Paper. We use it to let go of worries we have been holding onto or to send positive thoughts for others out into the universe.
A meditation & mindfulness practice provides my students with coping skills, helping them to refocus their intense emotions.
As our practice grows, I hope my students will carry the skills they are learning into other areas of their lives. As the Dalai Lama once said, “If you don’t love yourself, you cannot love others. You will not be able to love others. If you have no compassion for yourself then you are not able of developing compassion for others.”
