Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our second grade students are full of energy and eager to learn and explore through multiple hands on activities. My students live in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx with many of them coming from shelters and low income families. When they come into the classroom they are encouraged to stay motivated and reach for the stars. I love teaching the skills my students need and allowing them to experience mathematics in fun and creative ways that will make them life long learners.
My Project
My students are in need of an air purifier in the classroom for many reasons, number one being their physical health. Our school is located in the Mott Haven area of the South Bronx, near the Bruckner highway which causes major pollution. According to community health profiles published by the New York City Department of Health in 2015, 0.3 percent of children aged 5 to 14 were hospitalized for asthma in New York City in 2013, 0.7 percent were in the Bronx, and 1.2 percent in Mott Haven and Melrose. The schoolyard from our school is receiving renovations, the project will be completed by the end of the school year. We are super excited about the changes however the construction is producing a great deal of dust, which leads to increased student and staff illness. Our school was also flagged for having asbestos during the summer. This amazing Dyson Air Purifier will automatically remove 99.97% of allergens and pollutants including pollen, dust, mold spores and bacteria from our classroom, which will help create a healthier classroom environment overall, especially for students with asthma and allergies! I hope this machine will help students feel better in class with more energy and alertness for learning. Finally, I hope this machine will provide more oxygen to our brains. I simply want students to feel better and be healthy.
