Breakthrough Books for the Year That Changes Everything
Help me give my students critically-acclaimed and engaging books with protagonists who look like they do, and who face similar challenges of displacement, discrimination, abuse, family problems, and peer pressure as they work towards their goals.

My Students
My students have heart, even when they're hit hard. Many of them come from diverse backgrounds. Some have families that struggle to make ends meet, but they come to school regardless. Several are immigrants, or children of immigrants. Some will be the first person in their family to attend college. Many of them are also painfully unaware of their potential. I'm determined to empower them.
This will be the year that changes EVERYTHING.
For years I've worked to foster literacy amongst my students, and this year, with its new group of students, will be our most powerful year yet. My students will connect with the strength and inspiration that come from good literature. They will see characters in novels who have similar backgrounds and challenges to their own. Although many of my students may enter my class as infrequent readers, they won't remain that way for long. As I work to inspire a love of literature within them, and as I help them to develop the crucial skills of reading and thinking critically, then I will be giving them a strong foundation for all future success.
My Project
These critically-acclaimed novels not only feature protagonists with some of the same diverse backgrounds and experiences as my students; they also showcase stunning and award-winning writing. Stories of refugees, victims of abuse finding their voices, foster kids, aspiring athletes, and more await my students. These teens hunger for good stories...some of them just don't know it yet.
It often takes just one "breakthrough book" to turn a reluctant reader into a ravenous one.
I've done my research, and I try to keep up to date about the best books for teens so I can be my students' "book guide." When one of my students finally finds a book they love, I'm able to open their eyes by showing them a variety of similar novels with equally engaging stories. Who knew there was so much out there? You and I did! With your help putting great books into my students' hands, their lives as readers will never be the same.
