BreakoutEDU: Unlocking 21st Century Learners

My students need BreakoutEDU boxes to be problem-solvers, critical-thinkers, and collaborators in the classroom.

My Students

I teach 20 culturally diverse nine-year-olds in a high poverty area. Some of my students are new to the United States and learning English, and some of my students receive special education services. All my students are unique with unique social, emotional, and academic needs. We embrace our differences and find the diversity among us to one of our strengths.

My students thrive when working on tasks together in teams, and my students are highly motivated when technology is integrated into their learning.

In our class, we are a family and a community of learners. I spend time at the beginning of the year talking about how we support and defend our family members, so we will do the same for our classroom family. We hold each other accountable, and we don't want to let our family down so we always do our best. We set personal goals and class goals and always focus on how we can grow together.

My Project

I attended DMPS's TechCon2018 where I learned about new technology and how it can be integrated into learning to motivate and engage students. One session that stuck out to me during TechCon was on BreakoutEDU, "an immersive games platform for learners of all ages." In the session I attended, I was challenged to work collaboratively with three other teachers to solve puzzles and unlock multiple locks in order to open a box in 45 minutes. The potential for how BreakoutEDU can be used with my 4th graders is endless! I can use BreakoutEDU for any subject area, and I know that my students will love this hands-on approach to learning.

By donating to this project, you will help me challenge my students to use teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills to solve puzzles and open the box.

I was fortunate enough to win one BreakoutEDU box from TechCon2018, and I'm so excited to create my own Breakout challenges! However, I would love to have three more boxes so that my students can work in small teams (about 5 students per team) on a BreakoutEDU task. This way, all students get to actively participate and have their voices heard. I truly appreciate your support in making this type of learning a reality for my students!
