This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th graders are passionate and enthusiastic about science and they are creative and active critical thinkers. My students especially enjoy activities that get them moving and challenge their thinking in a hands on environment. Experiments, games, and competitions are their favorites.
As an ESL teacher, it is vital to give my students multiple opportunities to explore the world while developing their English skills through cooperative learning with their peers.
Recently, they have enjoyed completing escape rooms, lock-box challenges, and STEM projects about the science concepts we are learning about. I am very excited to share the excitement with my new students this year!
My Project
The materials for the escape rooms and lock-box challenge will allow my students to interact with science concepts in a non-traditional and engaging manner. The challenge to open the box will help motive my students to complete their task and learn the concepts being taught.
Children need to get up and move!
Sitting at a desk all day can be boring and not engaging. What better way to learn than with a challenge that will get students moving, thinking, and working together.
The products I have selected will challenge my students to complete six rigorous tasks in order to unlock a mystery prize. With each task, my students will analyze data, make observations, and form conclusions about science topics to unlock each lock. With every successful attempt, they will be one step closer to the grand prize and with each unsuccessful attempt, they will need to problem solve and communicate their findings to determine where they went wrong, developing grit and perseverance along the way.
