We are a rural, Appalachian-cultured school with 99.1% of our students economically disadvantaged according to the State of Ohio Report Card. Family dynamics in our district are diverse with many students being raised by extended family members and in foster care. We are a small elementary school, but we have a strong sense of connection to each other and a commitment to overcoming obstacles.
There are three 5th grade homerooms with each block containing students with ability levels from kindergarten to junior high.
Since our district has such a high poverty level, our school does not supply many things that bigger districts may have. I often rely on grants and my personal bank account to get needed resources for my classroom.
My Project
There are over 250 games available for all grade levels and interests with the Breakout EDU boxes. The student engagement during an active game is 100% amazing! There are games that focus on mathematics skills, literature, science or social studies content, and even an integration of multiple subject areas.
These games give students an opportunity to read clues, solve problems, collaborate, and discover solutions to unlock the mystery inside a box!
There are many steps including riddles to figure out how to find more clues, using technology to search for factual answers, codes to reveal hidden lock combinations, and even finding concealed supplies needed to unlock one of the five locks that are preserving the contents as top-secret!
My 5th-grade students are hooked on this game and our grade level needs three kits in order for all students to participate at the same time. The possibilities are endless! We could encourage a friendly competition for teams to finish first, or we could set up multiple games in different rooms during a certain period of time.
