I am the Varsity girls soccer coach at a small high school in Southern California. Our student population is 90% Hispanic and 100% of the students receive free lunch. Though soccer is an incredibly popular sport, the means to fund a well equipped team has been a constant struggle due to the low socioeconomic status of the community and budget restrictions by the district.
Unfortunately, what many higher-ups in the education system don't realize is that sports is often the only reason many students even show up to school. Furthermore, the athletic academic requirements (no pass no play rule)serves to encourage student achievement in the classroom. Though our parents and the surrounding community have always supported us however they can, its just not enough to provide the students the quality athletic equipment they need and deserve.
In order to give them the quality high school sports experience they deserve we need size 5 soccer balls for practice and games.
The girls on my soccer teams are breaking the stereotypes about young Hispanic women in their community. They are not in gangs, involved with drugs, or dealing with teen pregnancy. Rather, they are bright, motivated, and spirited girls who all talk of college and beyond. They have made all the right choices on the path to becoming honorable and productive citizens and should be rewarded for it.
